What are the Do Something Awards?
The Do Something Awards ® (formerly the BR!CK Awards) honor young (25 and under) world-changers who are the pivotal “do-ers” in their cause, issue, or field. These are amazing young people who have made a significant impact and are showing the world how it’s done.
The five nominees will be rewarded with a community grant, participation in a live VH1 TV show, media coverage and continued support from DoSomething.org. The grand prize winner will receive $100,000 during the live broadcast.
VH1 has partnered with DoSomething.org to create the premiere award platform for young people and social change. VH1 will televise live the 2010 Do Something Awards on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 from Los Angeles!!!
Why are the Do Something Awards important?
Athletes have the Olympics. Singers have the Grammys. Young world-changers have the Do Something Awards.
Who wins the Do Something Award?
Pat Pedraja, 13, Florida: Driving for Donors
At the age of 10, Pat developed leukemia. After seeing patients die with no matching donor, Pat learned there was a critical shortage of ethnic minorities on the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. Pat and his mom got into an RV and drove cross country, to 32 cities, to get minorities to join the registry. By selling sponsorship on his bald head, he raised over $140,000 and added 8,000 donors to the NMDP Registry.
Maggie Doyne, 22, New Jersey: Kopila Valley Children’s Home
The summer after graduating from high school, Maggie went backpacking in Asia. She was so moved by the many orphans she met in Nepal, she decided not to return home. She used her savings to buy an acre of land, build a children’s home and dedicate her life to caring for orphans. She currently cares for 29 kids and has helped find families for over 700 more.
Marvelyn Brown, 25 , Tennessee: Marvelous Connections
At 19, Marvelyn thought that when her “Prince Charming” said he didn’t want to use a condom, it meant he really loved her. Three weeks later, she tested positive for HIV. She was shunned by her community and shocked by their ignorance. Instead of hiding, Marvelyn chose to tell her story. She wrote an autobiography and starred in PSA series. She’s spoken to over a half a million people worldwide, convincing over 200,000 to get tested for HIV.
