Pakistan: Sukkur - GCC educates students and the community about Food Security
On October 12th, GCC youth in Sukkur organized some sessions around issues of food security at the Government Comprehensive Higher Secondary School. The purpose of this activity was to create awareness of food security related issues among students.
Many students have been directly affected by the flooding last year and continued heavy rains this year. Issues of flooding cause problems in the infrastructure and also all the seasonal crops.
Organizing events for food security was felt to be the most relevant actions when the effects of flood are still alive. Youth leaders in Sukkur held meetings and decided to conduct some sessions with students of different schools for raising maximum awareness on issues of food security. The discussion generally went in groups reflecting on issues of food security affecting their daily lives.
The sessions were held in three different sections having 70 students in each section. The student’s age was between 12-14 years. The GCC youth leaders divided themselves into three groups with each group willing to facilitate sessions in one of the three sections.
The GCC youth leaders organized sessions on following topics:
- What is food security?
- Hunger
- Malnutrition
- Hygienic food
- Junk food and its usage?
- What are your favorite fruits/vegetables?
- What is the ratio of food production vs. its utilization?
“Such activities not only enhance students understanding but also develop an attitude towards food utilizations and its wastage. Youth leader”
Some parents & teachers also joined session to encourage youth and students. The School administration appreciated the efforts of GCC youth leaders for their hard work and requested that similar session be held in the future for all students.
