Iraq: Sulaimanyah - Global Health Day
Global Health Day, First Aid Session in Sulaimanyah
In recognition of Global Health Day, GCC leaders in Sulaimanyah participated in an intensive first aid training session. After taking part in an initial GCC member only training for the first day, the leaders engaged with non-members on the second day. It is worth mentioning that one of the GCC leaders who participated in the first day training is a medical student and was able to help the doctor facilitate the second day of training. The information and skills the youth learned were practical and interesting. The participants liked the two full days of interactive learning and training.
Fundraising:
GCC leaders in Sulaimanyah received a fundraising training. It started with the definition of fundraising, which can be understood as collecting money or goods that the fundraisers gather to meet some community needs. The next lesson focused around the seven trends of fundraising according to Helen Kennedy, for example, aging boomer phenomena, donor expectation, technology, multiculturalism and so on. They also learned what to consider during fundraising including what issue to fundraise for, what organizations to work for, and to look at what is your target audience.
To put the lessons into practice, the instructors helped the youth to plan a fundraising project for the future. Finally the youth learned about several other attributes that fundraiser can do besides fundraising, such as awareness, education, empathy and understanding, and inspiration. The training participants found it interesting and useful to their future fundraising projects.
Youth recruitment:
On the second day of the Global Health trainings sessions, some of the non-GCC participants became interested in the GCC youth work and 15 high school students decided to join the program. They first came as project beneficiaries, but are now full members.
