Indonesia: Jakarta - YEAH for Kids! & DIA!

On January 8th, 2012 Global Citizen Corps leaders and Indonesian Youth Health Ambassadors held two workshops on Health and Peace Building in Permata Hati Orphanage, Bogor. The actions were titled YEAH for Kids! (Youth’s Encouragement At Hand washing for Kids!) and DIA! (Dream, Illustrate, and Act!). Those actions were chiefly organized by Nikita and Kinanti, along with help from other GCC leaders and volunteers. The event was a great success with about 30 orphans particpating.

The first session was YEAH for Kids!, which was presented by Nikita. She gave a lecture on hand washing using videos as a visual aid. The aim was to introduce correct techniques of hand washing and encourage them to always wash their hands before eating. The facilitators taught the global hand washing dance, which quickly became the orphan’s favorite part of this session. To evaluate what they had learned from the lesson, Nikita asked the kids to come forward and demonstrate the hand washing steps. Each child stood in line and was given small amount of soap. Nikita showed correct hand washing steps while the children imitated her. After watching videos and walking through the steps with the adults, the children were able to replicate the correct hand washing techniques.

The second session was DIA! (Dream, Illustrate, and Act!), conducted by Kinanti. The aim was to increase their achievement motivation as well as celebrate International Peace Day. The first step of peace building that Kinanti taught the youth was that in order to help build peace within a community, an individual must have peace within his or herself. The action was presented by watching motivational videos and drawing their dreams. Kinanti also told a story titled “Caca the Eagle” in order to inspire confidence in working hard to reach their dreams ,as well as, motivational shouting of,  “Yes I Can!” At the end of the session, each child stood up and told the group their dream and shouted, “Yes I Can!”
